A New Adventure: Thread Painting & We're Planting!

Since I made the Pansy Wall hanging, I have wanted to try thread painting.  I tried it many years ago and it was a complete disaster because I used regular sewing thread and I didn't know what stabilizer was.  It makes all the difference in the world when you use the right thread and stabilizer.  I used Isacord and Coat's & Clark's  machine embroidery thread.

I worked off a picture that I clipped out of a magazine that I really liked.

Here is a practice feather and background that I used for on the back.  It was a fun project and now I know that I really like thread painting!

We've been blessed with a few short days to do some planting.  During the rush time my son had a flat tire on the big tractor.

We were so happy that Ron stayed to help Dad out on the farm.

After a few hours, Ron was up and working ground ahead of Dean.  The next day I came home from work at noon and by 2:00 p.m. I was working ground until 7:00 p.m.  Then I baked pies for church.    It was a really long week!

So far we only had a flat tire and that isn't considered a major breakdown.  Dean kept on planting while Ron bought a new tire.

Here's a beautiful sunset from a few days ago.

I know the picture is a little blurred, but it's still a part of our farming story.

Don't forget to see my quilt for the Blogger's Quilt Festival.

Happy Quilting!

Love the little bird:) Thread painting is fun, lots to explore. We don't have a seed in the ground and it looks like it will be awhile before that happens...but we have faith, everything will work out okay:) Thank you and talk soon!

Your little bird is adorable! The details are so crisp and clear. At a glance, one would never believe you created this with a standard sewing machine. Nice job!

What a beautiful work of art! Beautiful! I have never heared of thread painting before. Is it embroidery work but done with the sewing machine? I think I got that from the comments.
I love to see pictures of your farm life!!
Have a nice week!

Hi Kay,

I just got home from traveling all day from Utah and saw your gorgeous bird...it is beautiful!!! When I first saw it, I assumed you'd thread-painted your bird directly on the quilt and then done background quilting behind it. Then when I saw the feather quilted on the white background, I thought maybe you'd thread-painted the bird separately on a hoop, then cut him out, and then stitched him to your background. How'd you create this masterpiece?! Inquiring minds want to know...

I thread painted directly on the fabric and then quilted around the bird. I did not use a hoop, but I did have batting and a backing underneath the top fabric. The feather on the back of the potholder is actually a fabric on top and just batting. It was a practice piece that actually was the right size to put on the back of my bird. I wasn't planning on making it a potholder--it just happened that way. The next time I do it I will be using tear away stabilizer underneath. I think it will do a better job. I marked an outline of the bird and filled him in with free motion straight and small zig-zag stitches. I'm a free motion quilter so thread painting was something just fun to try out. I will be doing more experimenting in the future.
