November Friday Night Sew In

I spent my Friday night Free Motion Quilting a lap quilt for several hours.  The type of quilting I do doesn't happen overnight, but the results are worth it.  I hope to finish in time for Christmas.

We had some really grey skies earlier this week and also a tornado watch.
Life has been busy at our house with the holidays just around the corner.
Hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving!

October Friday Night Sew-In Results & Beating the Rain

Actually I have been sewing a few hours every afternoon this week.  It has been gloomy and rainy here since Wednesday.

I've been working on one block at a time.

Here is what the back looks like.  I will have pictures when it's all done.

Early this week there has been a mad rush to beat the rain that was coming.  We did get all the soy beans in the river bottom field all combined before the rain came and flooded the field.

During harvest season it's not unusual for the neighbors to see me driving loaded wagons or following Dean with my four-way flashers.  If you live in farming country where there is slow moving equipment, please leave a few minutes early and be patient with us.  We don't enjoy blocking traffic and being in someone's way--we're just trying to get our crops in.

After all the rain, it will be a while before we're out in the fields.  Every year is different in farming and this year sure is different!
I did have quilt club this week and had a wonderful evening with the girls!

Friday Night Sew In Results & Bees In the Wrong Place Again!

Below is my Friday Night Sew In results.  This is the applique flower that I did in Harriet Hargrave's class.  I used YLI invisible thread.  There is a shine to this thread, which is alright with this small wall hanging, but there are times when I want invisible thread to just blend in.
In the near future if everything goes as planned, Harriet will be carrying a nylon thread that doesn't shine.
It also blends in with the colors of your quilt and best of all it wears and washes really well.
I think I'm willing to try invisible out again on a big quilt and see what happens.
Many years ago I quilted with invisible thread, but didn't like the plastic look to the thread.
After seeing Harriet's quilts in person, I'm going to give it a try.

Last year in July we had problems with bees trying to make a nest in our house.  Well--they're back!
I like bees outside doing bee things, but not in my house.  Hopefully we will get the problem solved in the next few days.

Fall is just around the corner in my corner of the world!

August Friday Night Sew In Results

This is a lap quilt that I am working on for a gift.  The colors match my daughter-in-law's rug and modern art painting in their living room.

I thought that the circle theme would complement the decor that they already have.  Now I have to get it finished before Christmas.

Hope you're enjoying the last days of summer.
We should be harvesting our corn and beans by the end of September or early October.

Happy Quilting!

We Have Winners!---Friday Night Sew In Results---Blessings

My random number generator, my husband, has picked out three numbers!
No--you read it right. I have three winners instead of two.  I had enough time to finish three potholders!

Shez from Enjoying Life blog
Gra from Chez Gra blog
Needled Mom from Needled Mom blog
Please take time to check out their blogs--you won't be disappointed!

The real winner is me.  Your friendship and sharing has been wonderful.  I've made friends that the miles may divide, but our quilting interests bring us all together.  Thank you all for your friendship.

I've had a very busy weekend.  My quilt club had a donation quilt retreat.  We started sewing early Friday afternoon and sewed late into the night and early again Saturday morning.

I machine quilted this quilt at the retreat.  My quilt club didn't even know that they were participating in the Friday Night Sew In!
You may want to click and enlarge the picture below.  The heart fabric seems to pop out at you because I didn't quilt it and the purple fabric seems to recede back because it is heavily quilted.  I liked the effect and decide to leave the heart fabric unquilted.

This is Linda's first quilt!  She has done a wonderful job putting it together.
Great job Linda!

Here is a shy quilter, but she sure isn't shy in donating it.
I just love all the colors!  It will certainly bring a smile on some babies face.
It's been a weekend full of fellowship and sewing!

Things around the farm have been greening up.

I had posted that we had some flooding.  This wheat field was under water for several days.

Just look at how green our winter wheat is.  I think our prayers have been answered--what a blessing!

Things are busy on the farm.  My husband worked on getting flood debris off of our wheat while I was gone.  The picture above tells me why he was so tired in the evening.  He raked it all by hand.

February Friday Night Sew-In Results

I worked on the binding on my Wacky Quilt most of Friday night.  If you haven't seen it yet, please click here.  It didn't get quite finished, but it's close.  I also helped my sister sandwich the wall hanging below.  It's called the Twelve Dog Days of Christmas.

Here is a full sheet cake that I decorated at the bakery for a first birthday.  First birthdays bring a lot of memories of when my kids when they were little.

Hope you're having a wonderful weekend.

More Florida Quilt Shops & Friday Night Sew-In Results

The next Florida quilt shop I would like to talk about is Quilter's Quarters located in Zephyrhills.
This small quilt shop has a nice warm hometown appeal.  My mom and I've already have taken two classes in this quilt shop.  This year we made a table runner together.

We had a fun time sewing together in their large class room.  Every hometown needs a quilt shop like this with the friendly people that know you by your first name even though they've only met you a few times.  The fabrics here are unique and beautiful.  The walls in this quilt shop are full of samples that make you want to buy the pattern and rush home to make your own.  So if you're driving through Zephyrhills make sure that you stop at Quilter's Quarters, you will not be disappointed.

Another quilt shop that is not too far from Zephyrhills is Quilts on Plum Lane in Dade City.

This friendly quilt shop has lots of patterns and books to look at.  They also have a nice selection of fabric that mom and I had fun looking through.  They also had some really beautiful samples hung on the wall.  Also in Dade City there are several antique stores nearby that we walked through.  Miss Teddy just wanted me to take her picture in her new dress!

Here is the last but not least of the quilt shops that we visited--Patchwork Pig  at Lakeland.
They are located in a beautiful historic building with hardwood floors.  I was so excited about my purchases that I had forgotten to take a storefront picture.  Please check out their shop pictures.  This shop is well blessed with plenty of square footage to display fabric and patterns.  I love the antiques that they have nicely displayed.  This shop gave me an idea on how to store my patterns, which I will be posting on soon.

The people at the Patchwork Pig were also friendly to visit with.  I also was impressed with their classroom that had plenty of room for the students to work.
You're probably wondering which shop is my favorite.  Well--I think they all have top ratings in my opinion.  To me it doesn't matter how big or small a quilt shop is--each place has its unique personally that inspires me to quilt for others.  I want to thank all you ladies for making our little shop hop such a wonderful memory.

Friday Night Sew-In was a very productive night.  I sandwiched together a lap quilt that has been gathering dust in my closet.  This is called a Wacky Quilt.  Mom and I took this class together when the Quilt Bus was in town several years ago.  Mom's has been finished for a long time and mine turned into a UFO.  Now is the time for it to be finished.

Below is a baby blanket that I also sandwiched together.  Now it's time to get these quilted!

Friday Night Sew-In Results

There was no sewing going on for my Friday Night Sew-In, but I had fun cutting out I Spy blocks.  Check out the fabric above.  What a fun fabric!!!

I spy dolphins!  I spy a cow!  I spy a pig!
No I'm not crazy, just a child at heart :)

The farm animals were fun to cut.  I tried to cut the squares so there were more than one animal in a block.

Yesterday was an extremely long day at the bakery working on a fall wedding cake.  This cake taught me patience and "no" you can't hurry tiny flowers!

Thanksgiving is next week!  Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday!

Friday Night Sew-In Results With Trapunto and Spiders on the Loose

This is a table runner that I had done a class on many years ago.  It is all finished, but I had decided to do a little trapunto in the quilting so it has been sitting in my sewing room for a long time unfinished.

I had decided that I wanted to trapunto the machine quilted sunflowers to make the quilting show up more.  The first step is to glide your needle with a double thickness of yarn between the quilted layers.

I then pull the yarn through my first hole (making sure that the tails of yarn are even), but not out of the quilted layer.  The whole purpose of trapunto is to leave some yarn behind that act as a fill.  The yarn is then clipped close to the quilt, but being careful not to damage the quilt.  Please don't do this when you're tired or in a hurry because you don't want to accidently damage your quilt.

After you have your object filled, I glide my needle back in the layers and pull the yarn all inside the quilt.  What I like about this technique is there are no holes in the quilt.  I've always liked the look of trapunto, but couldn't get past the old fashioned way of slicing the back and stuffing.  I know there are better ways of trapunto and I will eventually explore those techniques :)

Oh no----
There are spiders on the loose in the bakery!
No, it's just me doing a cake for some special people.  The cake will be displayed with special clear plastic pillars that will be at different levels.  The smallest cake will have a skull on top.
Yes--those are black widow spiders.

Anyone that is familiar with me knows that I don't like spiders!  They are welcome to be outside, but not inside with me--let alone on a cake.  I've been fighting the urge to swat a spider.
I did enjoy doing the cake and hope that they had a wonderful party :)

September Friday Night Sew-In and Fall is Officially Here!

I had a Friday afternoon and night sew-in!  Since last month, I have quilted my Courthouse Steps lap quilt.  Yesterday afternoon I started sewing the binding down and I have it just about half way finished.

Friday evening I started quilting my free motion quilt along quilt.  I wanted to get caught-up with the group so much that I got carried away.  I was only to quilt two of the white stripes and I quilted four.  Oh well, I did put a border on this quilt so I have enough room to do everything that Christina has in store for us.  When I was quilting the two white strips, I used a wavy line and then went back in the same direction making a wavy ribbon.  It was so fun that I kept on going!!!  With all the different colors in this fabric I couldn't make up my mind what color to use so I'm using five different colors that are variegated.  It's going to be something different.

I'm glad that I joined the Free Motion Quilt Along.  It's really helping me to think outside the box in quilting.  I quilted a flower design and what looks like a tale of a kite.  I think that design suggestions are just great and are something different!!!

When my husband is combining beans and making a lot of dust, fall is official.

I'm hoping for a safe harvest this season!
